ASDA consults Melksham traders prior to new store application ASDA held a special exhibition at the Rachel Fowler Centre on 17th September for members of the Chamber of Commerce and other local traders in Melksham to view its proposal for the development of a new store in the town. Members of the ASDA project team were on hand to explain site plans, answer questions and listen to people’s views.
The exhibition follows three special events held this summer as part of the public consultation prior to submission of a planning application.
Allison Darling, ASDA Property Communications Manager said: “ASDA will fulfil an identified need for more food and clothing shops in Melksham and I’m confident that the new store will present a positive opportunity for existing traders in Melksham by encouraging more people to shop locally. ASDA is committed to working closely with its local communities and the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive. The consultation has allowed us to take account of local views and to fine tune our proposal to accommodate these as much as possible.”
The new store will provide 28,500 sq ft (net) of retail space off the A350 as well as parking for around 250 cars. It will house both food and non-food goods, including the successful George clothing line and will create around 300 new jobs. Access to the store will be via the A350, where an all directions entry point will be created to improve traffic flow.
ASDA is currently looking into new and improved pedestrian and public transport links between the site and Melksham town centre.
A website specifically for the new store has been created to provide information about the proposed store and to give people an opportunity to forward their views.
ASDA plans to submit a planning application to West Wiltshire District Council by the end of the year. If planning permission is granted, the Melksham store will open in 2009.
