ASDA has launched a new website specifically for the new store it hopes to open in Melksham. The website explains information about the proposed store and car park and provides an opportunity for local people to forward their views.

The new store will provide 28,500 sq ft (net) of retail space off the A350. It will house both food and non-food goods, including the successful George clothing line, and will create around 300 new jobs. Access to the store will be via the A350, where an all directions entry point will be created to improve traffic flow.

Allison Darling, ASDA Property Communications Manager said: “The new website provides many details about the store and how ASDA will benefit the area as a retailer, employer and as a part of the community. Updates on the application as it progresses and illustrations of the store will be added to the site as time goes on.”

The launch of the website, www.asdamelksham.co.uk, forms part of ASDA’s wider public consultation exercise. A public exhibition will be held in July, where people will be able to talk directly to the ADSA planning team who will explain site plans, answer questions and listen to views. Details of the event will be announced soon.

ASDA intends to submit a planning application to West Wiltshire District Council in August, after seeking local views. If planning permission is granted, the Melksham store will open in 2009.

ASDA is dedicated to integrating with its surrounding communities and to being a Greener Grocer. The company prides itself on initiatives which include a commitment to sourcing local produce and striving to significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

ASDA is consistently named as one the UK’s top employers and is one of Britain’s biggest employers of the over 50s. The 300 new jobs at Melksham will include a range of roles, with full development and training opportunities on offer to colleagues.
