More than 350 jobs in the pipeline as Lowesmoor development takes shape The £75 million development of Lowesmoor, Worcester by Carillion Richardson is rapidly taking shape with the steelwork structure for ASDA’s multi storey car park now clearly visible from Pheasant Street. The ASDA will create as many as 350 jobs when it opens early in 2012 but it is anticipated that when the other shops and restaurants which are part of the development open, this will create hundreds of additional jobs making a massive impact within the city. The multi storey car park with its 535 new parking spaces will help ease pressure on existing city centre car parking. The situation will also be helped by the new pedestrian links that are being created to the main city centre. Crossings are to be created on Pheasant Street, St Martins and City Walls Road. The development of the car park is the first visible sign of the ASDA appearing but the supporting foundations of the new store are already in place and the demolition of the old TA HQ on Silver Street has cleared the way for rapid progress on the main store building. Martyn Richardson, of developer Carillion Richardson said: “The ASDA development will unlock the site for a range of supporting retail outlets and restaurants. It will provide much needed jobs and create an exciting, new, vibrant, destination which is steeped in heritage, at the heart of the city.” The site is a legacy of Worcester’s industrial past and one of the delights of the scheme is the fact that many interesting buildings that had previously been left to decay are being restored and will soon be visible once again. These buildings include the Great Filling Hall which has already been imaginatively restored for use as the new HQ for the Territorial Army. Other buildings being preserved (from the 100 year heyday of being the biggest vinegar works of its kind in the World) include the Counting House, the Cooperage and the historic basements. Other historic buildings such as The Infirmary are also being preserved. Retaining the spirit of the past is being sensitively integrated into the development of Lowesmoor which will be a unique attraction. For example, the Counting House will be integrated with the ASDA entrance. Elsewhere, details such as fragments of a remaining Kiln base has been incorporated into the design and the positions of other kiln base locations will be indicated in the paving. For ambitious new tenants Lowesmoor provides the opportunity for purpose built, modern retail space within a unique historic setting which combines the best of old and new at the heart of Worcester.
