Lowesmoor history event at the Guildhall proves popular

Hundreds of local people attended an event highlighting the history of the Lowesmoor area the city organised by developers Carilion Richardson in association with a range of local historians and archaeologists on Saturday afternoon.

The event was opened by the Mayor who praised the work being carried out on the site by developers Carillion Richardson and handed over to Neil Rudge of Carillion who outlined the details of the development.

An associated exhibition showed the vision for the scheme as a major new shopping and leisure facility in the heart of the city with shops and restaurants anchored by substantial ASDA store. The scheme includes conservation work that is being carried out to preserve important buildings on the site and bring them back to usage as part of the scheme and giving them new life. Throughout the development, Carillion Richardson has been working closely with Council historians and archaeologists to enable them to record the heritage of the site.

During the presentations the history of Worcester’s industrial past was explored including the massive vinegar works and the excavation of the Grainger Porcelain factory both of which will be referenced in the new scheme. With the high level of interest in Worcester’s Civil War past there was a surge of visitors with particular interest in the Civil War defences of Worcester and the findings of a trench excavated near Silver Street as part of the Lowesmoor scheme activity.

Selwyn Rowley of Carillion Richardson said: “The scheme has taken a lot of hard work and ten years to put together but the results speak for themselves with a development which will revitalise an important area of the city centre and create employment while also making an important contribution to the understanding of Worcester’s past.”
