Melksham site identified for new ASDA store ASDA has unveiled plans to open a new store in Melksham. The popular supermarket is developing proposals for a 28,500 sq ft store off the A350 and is expected to submit a planning application in the next few months. It hopes a Melksham ASDA store will boost the local economy and create 300 new jobs. The proposed development will provide a predominantly food based offer but will also include some non-food goods, such as ASDA’s successful George clothing range. The new store will be located off the A350 on the site currently occupied by Countrywide Farmers. The scheme will also include parking for around 250 cars and introduce new entry and exit points to the A350. The changes will help to improve traffic flow and provide easy access to ASDA.
Allison Darling, ASDA property communications manager, said: “The store will serve the local community with high quality, value for money goods and exceptional customer service in an accessible location just outside Melksham town centre. “ASDA will fulfil an identified need for more food retail in Melksham. We plan to hold a public exhibition in the coming weeks which will provide the opportunity for people to gain an understanding about the proposals and to feed back their thoughts.”
ASDA is dedicated to integrating with its surrounding communities and prides itself on local initiatives, such as a commitment to sourcing local produce. In addition, it recently launched a loyalty scheme to support independent traders when it opened new stores in three towns. Activities such as these provide support to local businesses and help to reduce the number of food road miles and the associated environmental impact of carbon emissions. ASDA also continually strives to significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and aims to ensure that all waste relating to its activities is recycled, reused or composted by 2010. The company is consistently named as one the UK’s top employers and is one of Britain’s biggest employers of the over 50s. The 300 new jobs at Melksham will include a range of roles, with full development and training opportunities on offer to colleagues. ASDA intends to submit a planning application to West Wiltshire District Council in August, after seeking local views. If planning permission is granted, the Melksham store will open in 2009.
