If you are looking for the tallest building in the world you now have to look to the prosperous states of the Middle East.
For a few years now, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai has held the record as the world’s tallest building but by 2020 this is set to be overtaken by the rapidly growing Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, being developed by the Jeddah Economic Company (JEC). The tower, currently well into construction, is expected to pass the 828 metre height of the Dubai icon and is anticipated to be the first building to reach one kilometre high.
There is however, even more to this development than an amazingly tall building and the overall Kingdom City scheme masterplan outlines the proposed development of its surrounding 5.3 million sq m area of land.
Located on Red Sea coast just to the north of Jeddah the area is to be transformed into a new city community based around a commercial core of international offices with a top class retail offer, balanced by open spaces and residential communities. After completion the scheme anticipates 210,000 full time residents and facilities for 197,000 visitors. We can anticipate ground-breaking infrastructure and transport systems as part of this world leading development.
